Breaking News: Addiction Not a Predictable Outcome of Opioid Prescribing

International Study Reveals Millions Addicted to or at Risk

Addiction Occurs in a Small Minority of Patients

In a groundbreaking study, research has found that addiction is not a predictable result of opioid prescribing, with only a small number of patients developing dependence on the medication. According to the study, an estimated 21 million people suffer from opioid use disorder, of which 18 million are related to prescription pain killer use.

The Global Burden of Diseases Injuries and Risk Factors Study estimated that, in 2017, approximately 405 million people were dependent on opioids. These substances activate opioid receptors in the brain, providing pain relief and euphoric effects. However, prolonged use can result in tolerance, dependence, and other adverse consequences.
