USA wins the most medals overall, with 33 total
The 2023 World Athletics Championships, held in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19-27, came to a close on Sunday, August 27. A total of 49 events were contested, with athletes from 206 countries participating. The United States topped the medal table with 33 medals overall, including 13 golds, 11 silvers, and 9 bronzes. Kenya finished second with 12 medals (6 golds, 4 silvers, and 2 bronzes), and Ethiopia was third with 10 medals (4 golds, 4 silvers, and 2 bronzes). Some of the highlights of the championships included: * Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won her fifth world title in the women's 100 meters. * American hurdler Sydney McLaughlin broke the world record in the women's 400-meter hurdles. * Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis set a new world record in the men's pole vault. * American distance runner Grant Fisher won a bronze medal in the men's 5,000 meters, becoming the first American man to medal in the event since 2009.
