Early Life and Career

Kevin Liles was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1966. His passion for music emerged at a young age, and he began his career as a DJ in local clubs. During his time at Def Jam, Liles quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the label's Director of A&R. He played a pivotal role in signing and developing some of the most iconic artists in hip-hop, including LL Cool J, Run-D.M.C., and Public Enemy.

Founding Def Soul Records

In 1994, Liles left Def Jam to found his own label, Def Soul Records. The label's mission was to create a platform for soulful and R&B music. Liles's keen eye for talent and his ability to connect with artists led to the signing of some of the most successful acts in the genre, including Musiq Soulchild, Maxwell, and D'Angelo.

Def Soul Records quickly became a force in the music industry, earning critical acclaim and commercial success. Under Liles's leadership, the label released several groundbreaking albums, including Maxwell's "Blacksummers' Night" and D'Angelo's "Voodoo."

Executive Leadership and Philanthropy

In 2004, Liles was appointed Executive Vice President of Island Def Jam Music Group. He oversaw the global operations of the label, which included Def Jam, Def Soul, and Island Records. Liles continued to make significant contributions to the music industry, signing and developing artists such as Rihanna and Kanye West.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Liles is also known for his philanthropic work. He established the Kevin Liles Foundation, which supports educational and youth development programs in his hometown of Baltimore.
